Peter Shearer, MD

Residency Director

I have been in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine over 10 years: first at Elmhurst Hospital Center and now at the Mount Sinai Medical Center as the Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program since 2006.  It’s really the only job I’ve had since finishing residency at Boston University and it’s the best.  In the past 5 years I have helped the program grow to a four year training program with 60 residents.  I have also brought change to the program by adding more critical care focus and progressive responsibility.  I have a particular interest in Medical Education.

I grew up in rural Massachusetts but was always meant to live in NYC. My personal interests are family, running, swimming and triathlons. Despite living in NYC I keep up with my swimming and I swam AROUND Manhattan for the 3rd time this past July with another Mount Sinai doctor who was celebrating his 80th birthday. Last fall I was proud to  run the NYC Marathon in 3:27 which was 10 minutes faster than when I last did it 6 years ago. It’s still not as fast as the 2:58 marathon I did when I was a resident but that seems like a long time ago now.
